Caught On Tape: Man Steals Church Collection Box In Shelby Twp.

SHELBY TWP (CBS Detroit) A young man with questionable fashion choices stole from the offering box at St. George Church in Shelby Township.

And police are hoping you can help them identify the suspect.

He spends roughly 10 minutes trying every trick he can think of to open the donation box, prying and shaking, and sitting on the box, to no avail. He returns to an SUV in the parking lot a couple of times to grab tools.

Eventually, he's able to crack the safe -- literally -- grab wads of cash and flee.

The police department mocked the young man's theft on Facebook, writing, "As you can see from the time stamp, he spent a significant amount of time under the watchful eyes of Jesus, the Holy Mother, and St. George's surveillance camera. We sped it up to show you how hard he worked.

"Let's forgive him for the persistent posterior presentation."

A local company got in on the comedy act, writing on the police department's Facebook page: "By the looks of that behind, he might have made an honest living joining our plumbing team....too bad he will be in jail instead! What a shame!"
