Caputo: Trading For Young Can Only Help Tigers
Acquiring Delmon Young from the Minnesota Twins Monday doesn't automatically assure the Tigers a spot in the postseason.
But it sure makes the odds better.
In a division where the idea seemingly has been to run in place and hope to move forward, the Tigers took an aggressive step. Young has been erratic in performance, true.
He hasn't, frankly, lived up to the hype he carried as the best prospect in baseball. The expected power hasn't been there. But the up times have been pretty good. He did drive in 112 runs last season. He is a solid .289 career hitter with a propensity to knock home runs in bunches. He does move better in the outfield than a slowed-down Magglio Ordonez, although he misplays more than his share of balls and is strictly a left fielder.
