Canadian Legion Apologizes For Racist Costumes

The Royal Canadian Legion has issued an apology to all of Canada after it awarded first prize at a Halloween costume party to a pair dressed as a Ku Klux Klan member and someone wearing a noose and blackface.
The party took place in the small town of Campbellford, Ontario, two hours northeast of Toronto. The Windsor Star reports the Legion had received hundreds of complaints by the next day.
"I sincerely regret the incident that happened at Campbellford Branch No. 103," Patricia Varga said Wednesday. "I also want the citizens of Canada and the members of the organization to know that this behaviour is not condoned by the Legion nor is it reflective of its members," she said.
The men who wore the costumes have also apologized.
One 21-year local Legion member told The Montreal Gazette the incident is an embarrassment.
"My first reaction [Tuesday] was that I was going to come in and switch branches," said Gary Russell outside the Legion. "I don't tolerate that type of stuff."
Legion members are concerned the controversy has erupted during its most important campaign to sell poppies. They worry this will reflect on the Legion and affect sales.
The branch was closed pending an investigation.
