Calvin Johnson Weighs In On Bye Week, Concussions, Anonymous Critic
DETROIT (97.1 The Ticket) Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson joined Stoney, Bill and Sara for his weekly chat Wednesday, discussing a number of topics including the anonymous NFC general manager who ripped the Lions.
"I didn't hear it and I really don't care unless it is somebody we're playing," Johnson said. "Now if we know their name then there is some extra motivation. If they want to be anonymous then who cares."
Johnson also talked about not catching a touchdown from quarterback Matthew Stafford through four games.
"There's always room to improve, but it's tough to get it on deep balls and especially down at the goal line when I'm doubled or bracketed," he said. "I try to move around, but they still cling on me and let the other guys get open one-on-one. "
Johnson was on the receiving end of a vicious hit by Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway two weeks ago. He credited Greenway for a good hit.
"He rung my bell pretty good, he got me, he caught me around the chin, that was a good hit," Johnson said. "It's a part of football, you get concussed, you gotta keep on playing. You can't get afraid to go across the middle any more than you were at the beginning."
Johnson took some time to make sure his head was right by heading to California for the bye week.
"It was great, I got to go to Santa Monica and get my beach weather in before it gets overcast and you never see the sun again. It was hard to get bored out there."
Johnson is refreshed following the bye and believes the Lions are facing a must-win situation.
"We have to win this one," Johnson said. "You don't want to put yourself in a 1-4 hole. I think we're a good road team. We had the best practice of the year today. We're focused."
Johnson also looked ahead to running back Jahvid Best returning soon.
"Jahvid is a mismatch for any linebacker in the league. He's so fast," Johnson said.
Finally, Johnson weighed in on the passing of Lions legend Alex Karras by telling us who the Lions version of Webster is (Karros appeared on the 1980s hit "Webster.")
"I can't say I remember Karras that much because the little guy Webster, who looks like (Stefan) Logan on our team, took all of the attention."
