Black Activists Say They Face Harassment By Detroit Police

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A group of black activists says in a lawsuit that Detroit police officers are harassing, abusing and mistreating them.

New Era Detroit sued in federal court last month, saying officers disrupt events and mistreat members, according to The Detroit Free Press. The lawsuit says: "This has become a disgraceful, repetitious and violent pattern ... and must be stopped."

Detroit police haven't yet filed a response to the lawsuit and a department spokesman says he hasn't seen the lawsuit. The city of Detroit also is named as a defendant. Mayor Mike Duggan has said that he's willing to meet with the group to discuss its concerns.

The lawsuit centers largely on June 7, when five New Era Detroit members were arrested after a dispute between one of its members and police.
