Bitter Cold Overnight

DETROIT (WWJ) - Southeast Michigan is in for a brisk and frigid night, Wednesday, with temperatures dipping to as low as zero degrees. That's according to Accuweather Meteorologist Dave Bowers who says, with the wind chill, it will feel more like -10.

The bitter cold will continue into Thursday, with some clouds and a high of only about 14 degrees, dropping as low as 4 degrees Thursday night.

Bowers says a little snow, along with a slight warm-up, is on the way Friday.

Here's the Forecast:

Thursday: Mostly sunny. Highs 13 to 17, with wind chill at zero. Southwest winds 5 to 15 mph.

Thursday Night:  Partly cloudy during the evening. Mostly clear overnight. A chance of flurries through 10 PM. Lows 1 below to 5 above, with wind chills around 10 below. West winds 5 to 15 mph, turning to southwest late.

Friday - Partly sunny through mid morning...then becoming mostly cloudy. Scattered light snow showers late. Highs 22 to 26. Southwest winds 5 to 15 mph. Chance of snow 40 percent.

Friday Night - Mostly cloudy. Scattered light snow showers. Lows 19 to 23. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of snow 40 percent.

Saturday: Partly sunny. Highs 28 to 32. Lows 24 to 28.

Sunday:  Mostly cloudy. Highs 37 to 41. Lows 28 to 32.

Bummed out?  There is some good news.

Accuweather forecasters say  big warm-up is on its way next week, and chances of another cold blast as widespread and long-lasting as the current one are slim to none for the rest of the winter. In addition, the warm-up will also allow a tremendous amount of the nation's snow to melt.

After the latest storm to hit the U.S. finishes pushing through this week, AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Henry Margusity estimates that roughly 60 percent of the country will be covered with snow. By late next week, he says this percentage will be reduced to about 25.

As we continue into February, AccuWeather.com Chief Long Range Forecaster Joe Bastardi says Michigan could see temperatures hitting a least, if not surpassing, the 50-degree mark.
