Best Places For Locally Roasted Coffee In Detroit


So you want a cup of coffee, but you want to support Michigan coffee roasters as well. Read this list to find the best coffee shops serving up locally roasted coffee.

The Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company has three locations in Midtown Detroit, Bloomfield Hills and Lake Orion, and its Bloomfield location is attached to the Maple Theater. It provides a funky, comfortable atmosphere in which to enjoy your cup of coffee, and you can even bring your drinks into the theater if you're seeing a film there. The company roasts its coffee in small portions, and is USDA-certified organic. It offers everything from its "Motor City Blend" to a decaf house blend, and has a variety of flavors to choose from. Great Lakes Coffee also provides cold-brewed coffee and beer, wine and appetizer-type foods.

Chazzano Coffee is unlike any other coffee shop you've been to. Its owner, Frank, encourages his patrons to snip or slurp its coffee, much like a good wine, since coffee has over 1,500 "flavor profiles." Chazzano makes sure to use the best roasting and brewing techniques as well to really bring out the flavor of each coffee. It's located on Nine Mile between Hilton Road and I-75, close to downtown Ferndale, and its name is pronounced the Hebrew way: "HA-zzano," rather than "cha-zzano," for the word "Chazzan" meaning "Cantor." Chazzano has a huge menu to choose from and is a must-go for anyone who enjoys a good cup of coffee.

Bean & Leaf is a small coffee shop located in downtown Royal Oak and it has a house roast that is specifically made for its business. It serves fair trade organic blends, including espresso from Nicaragua and decaf coffees from Mexico. True to its name, it also serves teas and specialty drinks, both hot and cold. The cafe also likes to spotlight local artists, and it sells all sorts of delicious desserts such as carrot cake, pumpkin pie and four-layer chocolate cake.

Commonwealth can be found in downtown Birmingham near the Uptown Palladium theater on Hamilton Row. It offers free WiFi and brews all of its beans in-house. Its Daily Offerings menu changes every day (hence the name) and ranges from Ethiopian to Costa Rican to Mexican coffee. Commonwealth also has a wide variety of hot and cold drinks, such as chamomile tea, as well as espresso. Breakfast and lunch can also be found here, and a weekend brunch menu too.

Zingerman's has built an empire in Ann Arbor and might be best known for its deli, roadhouse and creamery, but it also has a thriving coffee business. In fact, it even has a coffee bar located near the Briarwood Mall, a short drive from downtown. The coffee bar does Second Saturday of the Month tastings, where its managing partners discuss coffee and lead a roastery tour. Custom tours can be scheduled as well. Zingerman's offers coffees ranging from "Detroit Street Decaf" to "Sweet Yellow Brazilian Coffee," and also has iced drinks on hand.
