Best Creative Burgers In Metro Detroit
Craving a burger, but wanting more than your basic lettuce/tomato/pickle combo? Check out this list for the best creative burgers in the Metro Detroit area.
Mercury Burger Bar
2163 Michigan Ave.
Detroit, MI 48216
Mercury Burger Bar, located in downtown Detroit, has some interesting burger combos, but the extras you can add to your burgers are even more intriguing. Try the "N.Y., N.Y" burger, which comes with a patty with Groebel corned beef, swiss, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing, or the Flint burger, with green olives and cheddar. If you're adding toppings, try the fresh jalapenos, special sauce, Sriracha hot sauce, pickled spiced carrots (zanahorias) or a fried egg or fried green tomato. The S.W. Detroit burger comes with zanahorias, jalapenos, muenster cheese, tortilla strips and avocado, as well.
5169 Trumbull St.
Detroit, MI 48208
You can find the Woodbridge Pub in the Woodbridge neighborhood of Detroit, and it offers some burgers that you'd be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. For those not looking for a beef patty, try the Mahi Mahi burger, made with a housemade mahi mahi patty, carrots, cilantro and chipotle mayonnaise, or the Lamb Burger, with tzatziki, feta cheese, parsley and pickled red onion. If you want beef, Woodbridge offers the "Stever McFever," made with tomato, avocado creme and a balsamic glaze, as well as the Hipster Burger, with a portabella mushroom cap, goat cheese and herb mayonnaise. Gluten-free bread and vegan options are also available for ordering.
Basement Burger Bar
33316 Grand River Ave.
Farmington, MI 48336
Basement Burger Bar is located in downtown Farmington and has a ton of burger toppings from which to choose. To start, you pick your meat: angus, kobe, bison, black bean, portabella cap, chicken or turkey. From there, go wild with the toppings. The bar's most unique combinations are the "Hot Mamma" (spicy ketchup, lettuce, tomatoes, jalapenos and pepper jack cheese), the "South of the Border" (salsa, guacamole, sour cream and nacho cheese) and the "Tropical Burger" (smoked BBQ ketchup, lettuce, tomato, red onion with apple-smoked bacon, grilled pineapple and Swiss cheese). Or, if you're feeling especially adventurous, try the Basement Junk Burger, which has anything you'd ever thought of on a burger: red pepper mayo, ketchup, white onions, bacon, mozzarella sticks, Frickles (breaded/fried pickle spears), onions, onion straws and nacho cheese sauce.

Rochester Hills, MI 48309
Clubhouse BFD (Beer, Food, Drink) is known for its beer, but it has an interesting selection of burgers as well. Try the "Italian Stallion" (Genoa salami, ham, chorizo, provolone, lettuce, tomato and Italian vinaigrette on a baguette) or the Miami Burger (Swiss cheese, roasted garlic aioli, smoked ham, pickle slices and Grey Poupon on a brioche bun). If you can handle heat, "The Remedy" could be a good choice, too - topped with a fried egg, cheddar cheese, guacamole, bacon, and Cholula hot sauce on sourdough. You can also create your own burger if none of the combinations on the menu suit your fancy. Make sure to try the beer sampler as well with your burger.

This may surprise some, but Roast has a creative burger that's worth trying; the trick is to sit at the bar and order off the menu there rather than in the main dining room. Roast is located on the "street level" of the Westin Book Cadillac hotel, and has a bar/lounge area, dining room and a "semi-private" area for overflow seating. It's been named Restaurant of the Year by the Detroit Free Press, and has a varied menu. The burger everyone raves about at Roast is the Symon burger, which includes fried bologna, pickles, onion, cheddar cheese and special sauce. If that's not to your taste, try the Roast burger (bacon, cheddar, fried egg, pickled onion) instead.
