Berlin Township officials report scam involving someone asking to test residential water
MONROE COUNTY, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - Berlin Charter Township officials issued an alert Monday to residents that someone is knocking on local doors to request water tests, but then those homes became the targets of crime.
"Please do not open your door to anyone you do not know," the notice said posted on the township's website said.
Township Supervisor Mary Jo Gedelian explained in a press release that there have been two incidents in the last few weeks when a man appearing to be 50 years old approached homes and asked to be able to do water tests. After he was allowed inside; he let two other men in. The homeowners were distracted while the homes were ransacked.
Should the township water department need to visit a residence, Gedelian said, there will be a scheduled appointment. The crew will have an ID badge and arrive in a marked Berlin Charter Township truck.
