Macomb Community College's surgical technology program recognized for excellence: Macomb Community College's surgical technology program was recognized by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, the certifying agency for surgical technologists.  Acknowledging the 94 percent passage rate on the certification exam of those who graduated from Macomb's surgical technology program during the past year, NBSTSA awarded the program a certificate of merit. Surgical technologists facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. Under the supervision of a surgeon, they ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that the equipment functions properly and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. A surgical technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation of tools and technologies to support a physician performing invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Students in Macomb's program must first earn a skill-specific certificate with training in the sterile processing department before they can apply for the surgical technologist program.  Once in the program, students are trained in a state-of-the-art lab that is used to train students in a setting simulating the actual clinical environment. Their hands-on work at the college prepares students for the clinical portion of their training at health care partner organizations. Because of their background and training, certified surgical technologists (CSTs) also may be employed in leadership roles such as central service managers, and materials managers. CSTs also can apply their skills in specific specialty practices and areas. Those include medical robotics, endoscopy, and many types of adult and pediatric surgery. There is a growing demand for CSTs. Job opportunities for surgical technologists are expected to grow faster than average for all occupations through the year 2018. Littleton, Colo.-based NBSTSA, awards certificates of merit to educational programs that achieve at least a 90 percent pass rate on its exams.
