Avondale Student Finalist In Science Competition

Alternative energy research isn't just for adults anymore.

Avondale High School senior Sresht Rengesh was named a regional finalist in a prestigious national science competition from the Siemens Foundation.

A record 1,372 projects were submitted to the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology this year. Of those, 312 students were named semi-finalists and 94 were named regional finalists.

Sresht is one of only seven students in Michigan to receive the regional finalist honor.  His project was entitled "Novel Magnetoelectric Composites for Energy Harvesting." It outlines several different methods that can be used to make existing alternative energy harvesting systems more efficient and addresses a type of energy harvesting system that depends on piezoelectricity, or the conversion of kinetic energy from touch into usable electricity.

Sresht is the son of Krishna and Varsha Rengesh and a resident of Rochester Hills.

Regional finalists will go on to compete at one of six regional events held over three consecutive weekends in November; Sresht and other Michigan finalists will compete at the University of Notre Dame the weekend of Nov. 19-20. Winners of the regional events will then compete at the National Finals in Washington, D.C. Dec. 3-6 for an opportunity to win the top prize of $100,000.

The Siemens Competition distributes college scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $100,000 in individual and team categories. To learn more, please visit www.siemens-foundation.org.
