DETROIT - When the Detroit Tigers placed veteran catcher Alex Avila on the disabled list Saturday for a loose body in his left knee, Avila guessed he would need surgery, and he said he hoped to be back for the second half of the season.

On Tuesday night, there was still no decision on whether Avila would undergo surgery.

"Alex is going to see Dr. Kyle Anderson ... tomorrow for another evaluation," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Tuesday after the Tigers defeated the Minnesota Twins, 2-1. "We should know more tomorrow."

Ausmus said Avila's visit with Anderson will be his second physical evaluation, and the doctor will provide the third opinion the team has gotten on Avila's injury.

Avila has played in 22 games this season for the Tigers. He has a batting average of .200 and an on-base percentage of .342.
