Attorney, Bishop React To Kilpatrick Verdict
DETROIT (WWJ) - Local Attorney Norman Yatooma was one of those talking about Kwame Kilpatrick following his sentencing.
Yatooma had been at odds with the ex-mayor after filing a lawsuit claiming the ex-mayor had covered up the death of exotic dancer Tamara Greene following a 2003 Manoogian Mansion party.
Yatooma doesn't feel a lot of pity for Kilpatrick following the sentence:
"Kwame made his prison bed," said Yatooma." He brought this on himself."
"... Kwame has done a lot of wrong, and we stumbled upon more wrong-doings than I can count on all my fingers and toes and everybody on my legal team," he said. "That being said he is being denied less time from his family than Tami Green is being denied from hers."
Yatooma also said that,"there is nothing to celebrate," this is sad day for the city, Kilpatrick and his family.
"This is a travesty," Bishop J.Drew Sheard told WWJ's Stephanie Davis, after hearing the sentence for Kilpatrick.
"And the public doesn't know the kind of trauma his mother is going through," said Bishop Sheard ."He is still her son, and then his wife ... she (sent a) the other day ... they are still human beings."
Bishop Sheard said the sentence is excessive and wondered if this would have happened to anyone else in a similar situation.
Sheard counciled Kilpatrick and his wife, Karlita, during the tiem following the release of text messages revealing an affair between Kilpatrick and his chief of staff Kristine Beatty.
He has not spoken to Kilpatrick since his conviction on these charges earlier in the year.
