As Usual, Tigers Don't Have A First-Round Pick
The Tigers' problems run a lot deeper than just being without a selection Monday in the first round of baseball's free agent draft.
Detroit has forfeited its opening-round selection for three consecutive years, the result of signing free agents Jose Valverde, Victor Martinez and Prince Fielder.
The Tigers have more or less gotten their money's worth from the trio, at least in the short term. Some adroit drafting may cover up for the lack of a first-round pick, too.
Last year's top choice, catcher James McCann of Arkansas, is off to a good start in the minors after signing quickly for $577,900 and getting some pro exposure last summer.
