Artists' Market To Showcase Best Of Detroit

CLAWSON (CBS Detroit) Everyone likes to show off great taste with unique art and interesting things to wear -- but it can be tough to head to boutiques all over the metro area to hunt for wares.

That's why Leon & Lulu in Clawson is going to make it easy.

The roller rink turned downtown Clawson landmark will showcase the best of Detroit at its annual Artists' Market, which will feature the wares of 30 artists, including celebrated Detroit ceramics studio Pewabic Pottery. Also for sale will be wall art, jewelry, home accessories and fiber art, among other creations.

Among the unique things for sale will be the work of Christine Wilson, who turns Detroit-themed bottle caps into jewelry. "For her, bottle caps, when created with care, are the perfect ad form combining visual impact with lasting product recognition all in 25mm of metal," Wilson says on her website, adding that she "enjoys enhancing their beauty with her own artistry."

The Artists Market happens 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 3 and 3 to 8 p.m. June 5 at the store, 96 W. 14 Mile Road, Clawson.

Leon & Lulu, located in the historic Ambassador Roller Rink and owned by veteran merchants Mary Liz Curtin and Stephen Scannell, is a 15,000 square foot store with a one-of-a-kind, eclectic mix of upscale furniture, unforgettable fits, and accessories.

The store is donating 10 percent of total sales to benefit Cass Community Social Services, a non-profit organization that seeks to link job training and permanent employment with ways to reduce our footprint on the planet. They employ formerly homeless men to collect illegally dumped tires off of vacant lots in Detroit. The tires are then converted into stylish mud mats. To date, Cass Community has repurposed over 15,000 tires and sold over 7,000 mats, among other inspiring projects.
