NEW YORK (AP) — Comments on the Detroit Lions by the AP Pro32 panel (ranking in parentheses):
___
DETROIT LIONS (28)
Chris Berman (ESPN, 21) — Congratulations to Calvin Johnson. Now he sets his sights on 2,000.
Clifton Brown (Sporting News, 24) — Calvin Johnson is one of the few Lions who didn't underachieve.
Cris Collinsworth (NBC Sports, 29)
Rich Gannon (CBS Sports/SiriusXM NFL Radio, 27) — Problems started in the offseason and carried right into the regular season, one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL this year.
Bob Glauber (Newsday, 28) — What began with such hope will end with crushing disappointment known all too well by fans numbed by decades of failure.
Rick Gosselin (Dallas Morning News, 29) — This season is no longer about the Lions in Detroit. It's all about Calvin Johnson and his quest to become the first receiver in NFL history with a 2,000-yard season. He needs 108 yards in the finale Sunday against Chicago at home. The smart money says he gets it.
Clark Judge (CBSSports.com, 28) — Since they started 5-0 last season, the Lions are 9-18, including the playoffs. Just sayin'.
Ira Kaufman (Tampa Tribune, 27) — A loss to Chicago would give these underachievers an 0-6 slate against NFC North foes.
Pat Kirwan (SiriusXM NFL Radio/CBSSports.com, 28) — It's natural for players and teams to think we will start from where we left off. Every year it really is start at zero and climb the same mountain. I'm not so sure all the Lion players knew that was the case.
John Lynch (Fox Sports, 29)
Alex Marvez (Foxsports.com, 29) — Calvin Johnson is the lone bright spot on yet another dark season in Detroit.
Dan Pompei (Chicago Tribune, 30) — Calvin Johnson might be getting meaningless yards, but they count the same as meaningful yards in the record books.
