Amtrak passengers stuck for hours on stranded train near Battle Creek
Passengers were stuck for about four hours on an Amtrak train headed to Dearborn over the weekend.
The delay involved Train 352, with the mechanical problem happening about 7:14 p.m. Friday, according to a report from the train authority.
"The train does not work anymore, and now we're in the middle of nowhere," one of them said during the delay.
Amtrak officials said its crews worked with local authorities to send police and EMS to the location, and that doors were opened to assist with air flow as temperatures reached 80 degrees in the passenger area.
"It definitely was an uncomfortable environment that's for sure, not knowing what was happening not having a lot of information, also the heat a lot of people were getting frustrated about how hot it was, even myself I'm asthmatic so I had to constantly get up and go towards the door and let people take turns and getting fresh air," passenger Rachel Leondard said.
Amtrak said snack packs and water also were distributed to passengers while they waited for bus transportation, which arrived about 11:45 p.m. Passengers say they then had to jump out of the train and walk with all of their luggage to those buses around a half mile away.
Latresa Rice, who works in the office of Trio Programs at the University of Michigan Dearborn had over a dozen students on the train with her. She said the lack of communication from Amtrak throughout the evening was upsetting, but that she was pleased with by the generosity of her students.
"That was frustrating but to see my students really rise to the challenge, I mean they were walking down the isles with water, one of my students who is interested in going to medical school and is currently applying was even checking with some of the passengers to make sure they were ok that they didn't have any medical emergencies. It was just awesome to see them step up to the plate," Rice said.
