Actor J.K. Simmons Announces Plans To Shoot Film In Detroit

DETROIT (AP) - Academy Award-winning actor J.K. Simmons says a new King Kong movie he's starring in likely will be shot in Detroit.

Simmons made the announcement Monday at a fundraising event for a local nonprofit, while he was in town to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Detroit Tigers game.

Simmons said he's working with director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, a Royal Oak native, to shoot part of "Kong: Skull Island" in Detroit this summer. He said the beginning of the movie will be set in the city before the characters go to a mysterious island.

Simmons has appeared on Broadway, film and TV over the years. He won the best supporting actor Oscar in February for his role as a manic music teacher in "Whiplash."
