AAA Assists 22,000 In Near-Record Snowfall

DETROIT (WWJ) - Thanks to a snowy and slippery commute, AAA in Southeast Michigan had another busy morning. WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with AAA spokeswoman Nancy Cain.

"This morning we serviced more than 1,600 motorists.  We had a lot of spinouts, cars in ditches, dead batteries," Cain said.

"If you add this morning's total to the week, going back to Sunday, we serviced more than 22,000 motorists," she said.

Cain said she believes this is probably their busiest February ever -- and she may be right, if traffic incidents  sync up with the snow totals.

Folks near the Ohio/Michigan border got the worst of the morning's snow storm. More than four inches of snow fell on Morenci in Lenawee County and Newport in Monroe County. Detroit saw more than 2 inches. Kalamazoo and Battle Creek each got 3 inches.

With the accumulations from this latest storm, AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Carl Babinski  said Detroit would reach the second snowiest February on record. About 2.5 inches of snow fell by 7 a.m., Friday, for a total of 30.3 inches for the month of February.  The snowiest February on record  in Michigan was 1908 when 38.4 inches fell.

Chicago was expected to break their February snowfall record, Friday.
