4-Year-Old Shoots Herself With Her Father's Gun

DETROIT (WWJ) - A 4-year-old girl accidentally shot herself with her father's gun.

WWJ's City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas reported the shooting happened on Detroit's west side on Monte Vista, near Eight Mile Road and Meyers. Police say the 4-year-old found a 9mm Glock in the glove box of her dad's SUV. Authorities say she shot herself in the thigh with the weapon. A neighbor says it happened sometime between midnight and 1 a.m.

The youngster is now in stable condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

The father did have the proper license for the gun.

In a written statement, Detroit Police say it's important that every person who is the owner of a weapon, and it is not on their persons, to keep it secured. DPD's Police Community Services has free gunlocks available. Citizens may call 313-224-3945 Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. -4 p.m.
