2 Cows Killed In Crash Near Brown City

BROWN CITY (WWJ) - Two cows were killed and two people were injured in a crash in Sanilac County. Police said the 1,200-pound animals were standing in the road when they were struck by a vehicle Sunday night near Brown City.

WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with Lieutenant Bob Willis who said both cows were dead when emergency crews arrived.

The vehicle ended up in a ditch, but Willis said the Marlette couple in the car received only minor injuries.  They were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Willis said car/cattle crashes are rare, at least compared with accidents involving another farm animal.

"The last few years we've handled a number of vehicle/horse incidents, involving our Amish community up here where they're on the road with their buggies and their horses," Willis said.

"Cars come up on them suddenly and they're unable to avoid an accident," he said.

The cows' owners still haven't stepped forward.  Willis said there are hundreds of farms in the area, so it could take some time to find out to whom the animals belonged.
