1.2M Michiganders Traveling This Holiday Weekend

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - If you're hitting the holiday road this weekend, you'll have plenty of company. AAA Michigan's Nancy Cain says 1.2 million Michigan residents will be on the highways.

"We're gonna be heading anywhere near water -- campgrounds, state parks. Our survey shows that about 89 percent of us are going to be going by vehicle. This basically is a driving time ... A lot of folks, in fact, took this week off," Cain told WWJ Newsradio 950.

Cain said, along with the usual hot spots including Mackinac Island and Traverse City, other popular destinations this week are Petosky, Port Huron, Ludington and the Upper Peninsula.

Cain said the cost of filling up should not keep people from traveling, although they are more likely to stay close.

"Generally, yeah, we are hearing they are saying closer to home sometimes and not going as far. They told us, too, they may not be spending as much on souvenirs as they have, but they do want to travel," she said.

Cain said, while gas prices may have spiked over the past 48 hours, they are still far lower than the $4-plus per gallon we were paying back in April.
