Trinchera Ranch Goes To Court Over Power Line Plan

SAN LUIS, Colo. (AP) -- Billionaire Louis Bacon is appealing Colorado regulators' decision to grant Xcel Energy Inc. and Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association Inc. permission to build a power line over La Veta Pass.

He is asking the Costilla County District Court to reverse the decision by the Public Utilities Commission.

The proposed 136-mile power line would cross part of Bacon's Trinchera Ranch in southern Colorado.

Xcel and Tri-State say the transmission line will help them deliver power reliably and deliver renewable energy to cities where it's needed.

The commission has stuck by its decision. But Bacon argues commissioners made several mistakes in the process of making their decision, including not forcing the utilities to present alternatives. He also contends the line is unnecessary and costly to Colorado ratepayers
