Train Derails In Boulder, Evacuation Lifted After Investigation

By Stan Bush

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4)- It could take days to clean up a railway pileup in east Boulder.

Shortly after 3 p.m. on Tuesday a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad freight train derailed at least six cars near the intersection of 63rd Street and Arapahoe Avenue.

Investigators are still trying to determine how the wreck happened. The cars piled on top of each other toward what appeared to be the rear of the train.

First responders were concerned that one of the overturned cars may have been carrying hazardous materials and evacuated businesses in the area. The car was actually carrying plastic beads and after an hour the evacuation was lifted.

The train was uncoupled to prevent blocking road crossings in the largely industrial part of Boulder. No injuries were reported.
