Barricaded Suspect In Police Custody After Hours-Long Standoff

DENVER (CBS4)- A barricaded suspect was taken into custody after an hours-long standoff with police in Denver Thursday evening. Students at nearby schools were impacted by the police presence Thursday afternoon.

At about 5:10 p.m. police dispensed tear gas inside the home to coax the barricaded man outside. He was taken into custody and was treated for dog bites after K-9 officers went after the suspect.

Four schools were in lockdown or modified lockdown Thursday afternoon when police began dealing with a barricaded suspect at 2548 S. Tennyson in the Harvey Park neighborhood. Those schools were Doull Elementary, Force Elementary, Kunsmiller Creative Arts Academy and Dennison Montessori School.

At one point during the police activity a total of seven schools were in lockdown mode.

Students at Kunsmiller Creative Arts Academy were released at 3:50 p.m. Thursday. Parents of Doull Elementary students can pick up their children at Kennedy High School. They were required to show an ID before their child was released.

Police said the situation began as a domestic but then the woman involved was released. The man remained inside the home and fired at least one shot at about 3 p.m. which was not directed at anyone. He was threatening to kill himself if anyone tried to come inside.

A negotiator attempted to contact the man but those attempts were unsuccessful. That was followed by the gas being released.
