Senators: Region VA Hospital Contracts Bogged Down

DENVER (AP) -- Two senators say the construction of a veterans hospital serving Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming is bogged down in the contracting process but the reason isn't clear.

Colorado Sens. Mark Udall and Michael Bennet, both Democrats, said Thursday they don't know whether the holdup is the responsibility of the Veterans Affairs Department or the contractor. They say they have written VA Secretary Eric Shinseki seeking answers.

VA officials didn't immediately return a call Thursday.

It's not clear whether the planned opening date of February 2014 will be pushed back.

The 200-bed, $800 million hospital will be in Aurora. It replaces a 59-year-old facility in southeast Denver.
