Search Is On For Person Who Spray Painted Racial Slurs On Home

By Andrea Flores

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - An Aurora community is showing support for a woman after her home became the target of a possible hate crime.

Tuesday night, Ari, who only wishes to be identified by her first name, was at home with her teenage daughter when a neighbor notified them of some disturbing news.

Racial slurs, including the n-word, were spray painted on the door while they were home.

"They taped a note to the door that also said, 'Watch your back -- KKK.'"

It happened an unsecured apartment complex in the Tallyn's Reach neighborhood.

The Aurora NAACP chapter is standing by Ari's side.

"People are emboldened with this political climate, thinking that they can say and do anything," said NAACP Aurora Chapter President-Elect Omar Montgomery. "The NAACP is not going to tolerate it, and our community is not going to tolerate it."

Local leaders say the threat is more than skin deep.

"This isn't just an issue of black or white," said Denver Christian Bible Church Pastor John Morland. "It ought to bother any of us ... that have any sense of decency as a human being, regardless of race, color or culture."

Aurora police says the investigation is at the top of their list.

"We will pull out all the stops," said Police Chief Nick Metz.

While Ari says she no longer feels safe, she has a strong message to share for whoever is responsible:

"You're a coward, and your behavior is not acceptable. Your behavior will not be tolerated."

"If, and when, they do find the people responsible, I want them prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," she said.

Police are investigating all leads. They are asking anyone with information to come forward.
