Spectacular Irish Dancing Comes To The Buell In Time For St. Patrick's Day

By Kathy Walsh

DENVER (CBS4) - With St. Patrick's Day coming up this month you may see some Irish dancing. But none is more spectacular than "Riverdance." The 20th anniversary of the show is now playing at the Buell Theatre at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

It's been described as Irish step dancing on steroids. But the international phenomenon tells a story of Irish culture and tradition through music, song, and especially -- dance.

"'Riverdance,' I guess, put Ireland on the map, I guess 20 years ago, and it's great to be carrying that around the world," said James Greenan, one of the principal dancers in "Riverdance: The 20th Anniversary World Tour."

Greenan started dancing at age 10.

"My mother kind of pushed me into it," he said.

"The same as James. I was forced to lessons, absolutely forced," Ciara Sexton said.

Sexton is a principal dancer partnered with Greenan. She has been dancing for 24 years.

Coloradan Greg Molony was mesmerized at age 5.

"The PBS special came on of 'Riverdance' and I just looked at my parents and said, 'That's what I want to do,'" Molony said.

Molony is a graduate of Grandview High School. He joined the "Riverdance" tour two weeks ago and says he was a bit nervous at his first performance.

"I was just like, 'It went really well,' and turned to the trash can and threw up," he said.

"Riverdance: The 20th Anniversary World Tour" runs through March 13 at the Buell Theatre. Get tickets and show times at denvercenter.org.
