Previously Sealed Documents On James Holmes Released To Public

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Previously sealed information about suspected Aurora theater gunman James Holmes was released on Wednesday.

4 On Your Side Investigator Rick Sallinger looked over the documents from open records requests made by reporters and found it appears the University of Colorado is being very cautious about what it's releasing.

Sallinger said the documents are like a puzzle.

"We get lots of tiny bits and pieces and have to paste these parts together to make sense out of what seems like a senseless mass shooting," Sallinger said.

Holmes was a graduate student at the Anschutz campus of University of Colorado. What was released Wednesday included his application for a security access card. It lists Holmes with a Bachelors of Science (B.S.) degree in neuroscience. It says he was requesting the card in part because he was a researcher in a lab where animals were housed.

The document contains a picture of Holmes that most may not be familiar with that was apparently attached to the application.

Whether his access card from the Anschutz campus was revoked or if he turned in his access card when he dropped out has been a matter of contention in court hearings.

"I would anticipate that CU understands that there is the possibility that they may have some liability in this," CBS4 Legal Analyst Karen Steinhauser said. "Or at least they may be accused of having some responsibility for what happened."

A delivery log shows Holmes signed for a package on April 24, but the contents of that package are unknown -- for example, whether it contained ammunition he received by mail.

Sallinger also received records of his stipends from the National Institutes of Health for his research.

Also on Wednesday the university disclosed information it would not be releasing, including information about Holmes contact with the university police, his research, his academic record, and his application to the University of Colorado.

His next hearing is Nov. 10.
