Poudre River Flooding Causes Problems In Greeley
GREELEY, Colo. (CBS4) - Rising water in Greeley has washed out a road and turned one home into a virtual island.
Sandbagging is something of a tradition for Mary Jean Duran-Blitz. She lives near the intersection of 71st and O Street, and the Poudre River runs right nearby.
This year, as in past years, there are lines of sandbags piled up around the home and water from the river overspilling its normal boundaries.
The flooding is particularly bad this year, though, and the home has become surrounded.
"I have water all around it. It's like a little moat here," she told CBS4.
Water has already leaked into her office and her barn is under 2 or 3 feet of water.
Trails nearby are closed, as well as the roads outside the home.
"I've prepared myself as much as I can and I'm doing everything I can to weather this out."
Greeley officials say the recent cooldown should slow the snowmelt. They don't expect things to get much worse with the flooding.
Duran-Blitz, who has her own system of measuring the flooding using large rocks on the road outside, says the area has flooded "off and on" ever since she got to the area in the 1960s.
