Museum Of Nature & Science Asks For Help With Mammoth Naming
DENVER (AP) - The Denver Museum of Nature and Science is asking the public to help name the first mammoth found at a fossil site in western Colorado.
People can vote on five suggested names at dmns.org/snowmastodon-project, or at the museum.
Crews have uncovered an estimated 600 bones from Ice Age animals near Snowmass Village, including mammoths, mastodons, a giant ground sloth and ancient bison.
The first fossil was unearthed Oct. 14 by a man operating a bulldozer to expand a reservoir near the town.
The proposed names are: Jessie, for the bulldozer operator; Ella, for the construction superintendent's 3-year-old daughter; Ziggy, for the Ziegler family, who owned the land; Samammoth, for museum educator Samantha Sands; and Snowy, for Snowmass Village.
