Mayor Hancock Statement In Honor Of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
DENVER – Mayor Hancock today released the following statement in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day:
"Today, we continue our unbending march in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the legacy he left for us to follow. I am so proud to see thousands of Coloradans come together once again for one of the country's largest celebrations of Dr. King. Together, we once more demonstrated that the ideals of opportunity, justice and inclusivity he embodied will always have a home in Denver and Colorado.
"Unfortunately, not all battles against injustice and intolerance are behind us. While I truly believe America continues to carry the promise of equal opportunity for all, we must hold ourselves accountable. We cannot sit idly by and expect this great country to achieve its highest ideals and values on its own. It will take all of us, from you and your next door neighbor to the President of the United States. Dr. King knew this and galvanized a country.
"We must expect – we must demand – more of ourselves. Now is the time for you and I to not let the challenges of equality and justice divide us. Now is the time for us to unite as a community and ensure the diversity of our opinions, religion, and race remain the foundational strength of this country's success. As the Mayor of this great city, that's what I commit to here today and every day."
