Marijuana Advocates Bring '420 Games' To Colorado

DENVER (CBS4) - A group that aims to fight the stigma that marijuana is a drug for lazy people is encouraging people to join them in an athletic event they are calling the 420 Games.

The event, which promotes "the promote the healthy and responsible use of cannabis," will be held in Denver on Saturday and then in Boulder the following Saturday.

The two Colorado stops come on the heels of "tour" visits in the states of Washington and California. More than 300 people attended the games in San Francisco last month.

The event features a run that's "4.20" miles in distance as well as other activities that include yoga.

The 420 games are the brainchild of Jim McAlpine, who says on the event website the games are not "smoke ins." He urges participants: "If you choose to use marijuana before, during or after our events, please make sure to do so discretely, legally and respectfully."

The event organizers say former CU Buffaloes football player Rashaan Salaam and ultramarathoner Avery Collins will be taking part in the events in Colorado.

Denver's games are being held at Berkeley Lake Park starting at 8 a.m. and reggae singer Pato Banton will be performing as part of the festivities at a nearby bar called Local 46.
