Man Sentenced To Jail, Probation For Mattress Charity Scam

BRIGHTON, Colo. (CBS4)- A man who admitted to helping sell mattresses that were supposed to be donated to charity has been sentenced to jail and probation.

Adam Shryock was sentenced to 90 days in jail and four years probation in a $1 million charity fraud case involving the sale of donated mattresses.

Shryock had pleaded guilty to one count of charitable fraud, scheme to defraud and one count of theft.

Shryock, 36, and Genevieve Cruz were charged in April 2015 with multiple counts of theft in the scheme.

The charges allege that the two obtained Serta mattresses returned under Serta's warranty program under false pretenses, claiming they were being donated to the Ecumenical Refugee and Immigration Services Inc. in Denver and distributed to refugees.

Cruz served as donation coordinator for the charity. Instead, Cruz and Shryock sold most of the mattresses for profit at reduced prices from storage units in Adams County.

Adams County District Judge Thomas Ensor said he took into consideration Shryock's previous involvement with another charitable fraud with his company, Boobies Rock! Inc.

"This was a fraud against the public. Again," Ensor said. "He's smart, he's slick, he dances on the edge, and people who do that always, always, always fall off."

Cruz will be sentenced May 25 in Adams County Court.
