Man Faces Attempted Murder Charges After Shooting Standoff With Police
DENVER (CBS4) - A man accused of firing shots from an upper floor apartment into the streets of Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood was set to go before a judge on Friday.
A CBS4 crew was at 12th and Grant reporting on the story while shots were being fired in the early morning hours of Feb. 21.
Police say Shaun Tobelmann, 34, is the man who caused the four-hour standoff. He faces 11 counts of attempted first degree murder and 11 counts of first degree assault, plus a third degree assault charge.
Police said they initially responded to the incident on a report of a possibly suicidal person, but that situation quickly turned into an active shooting.
Tobelmann allegedly barricaded himself in his apartment and fired several shots from his fifth floor window onto 12th Avenue. SWAT teams surrounded the area and shot back at times.
After four hours, police fired a type of tear gas into the apartment, which likely prompted Tobelmann to surrender.
No one was hurt in the incident, although the apartment was damaged and many people had to evacuate their apartments while the incident was going on.
