Hockey Team Helps 'Color Out Cancer'

Kearney, NE -- Fans of two rival hockey teams in central Nebraska set aside their differences Thursday for a special tribute to those affected by cancer.

More than five hundred people bundled up and hit the rink to paint the ice with messages of love and support ahead of Friday night's big game between the Tri-City Storm and Lincoln Stars. In its second year now, the "Color Out Cancer" benefit aims to raise money and awareness in the fight against cancer.

"This event is a way for people in this area to connect with loved ones that have suffered from the disease and also a powerful symbol for people to see other families that have had their lives affected," said Dana Wright, Vice President of Business Operations with the Tri-City Storm.

Organizers are donating a portion of the ticket sales to local cancer charities. After the game, players donated their custom jerseys to be raffled off at games during the rest of the season as part of the "Jerseys For A Cause" program. Last year, it raised over $12,000.

The Tri-City Storm lost Friday's game, 2-0, to the Lincoln Stars. They take on the Omaha Lancers Saturday night.
