Hiring Preference Bill Clears Colorado Senate
DENVER (AP) -- A hallmark jobs proposal from Democratic Senate President Brandon Shaffer has cleared the Senate -- but it appears headed to certain death in the Republican House.
Shaffer's proposal would give state bidding preferences to companies that hire Colorado workers. Shaffer and most Democrats called it a tool to ensure Colorado tax money supports Colorado jobs. But Republicans derided the plan as a hindrance to businesses.
The measure passed 19-16, with all Republicans and one Democrat against. The bill now heads to the House, where ruling Republicans have said the bill faces long odds.
