Fort Carson Soldier Credited For Helping Crash Victims
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - Two Fort Carson soldiers are being credited with possibly saving the lives of three girls who were thrown from their father's vehicle in a crash on Wednesday morning.
Police say Mike Bobian, the father, ran a stop sign as he was exiting from Highway 115 at Lake Avenue and was broadsided by another vehicle.
Combat medic Pfc. Logan Cameron and Staff Sgt. Shane Corley were both near the crash scene in different vehicles. The two are both Iraq War veterans but had never met before Wednesday.
When Cameron arrived at the crash site he grabbed his aid bag, jumped out of his car and worked to stabilize the children and help the father.
"There were several people laying out on the ground," said Cameron, who had been on his way in to work at Fort Carson.
"They were able to respond to my commands," he said. "I was trying to get them to calm down and take deep breaths."
Corley had also been heading in to work at the Army base and showed up on the crash scene a few minutes before Cameron. He called 911 and tried to help the young girls.
"I don't think I did anything different than anyone else would have," Corley said. "Everybody's moral obligation when people are in distress is to stop and help."
For 25 minutes the two men worked side by side. Cameron says he went into triage mode, which he described as "Who looks the worst but isn't? Who actually is the worst and who needs help right away."
Reginald Green is a retired soldier who was driving the car that hit Bobian's. He told CBS4 partner KKTV that he was relieved when Corley and Cameron arrived on the scene.
"You could not have asked for a better response time. They just jumped into action," Green said.
Cameron said he was glad he was able to make a difference.
"Now we have three people in the hospital hopefully making a full recovery as opposed to something far worse," he said.
On Wednesday night the three girls were listed as being in critical condition but doctors were hopeful they would make a full recovery.
Police said Bobian was released from the hospital a few hours after being admitted and was given multiple citations, including one for careless driving.
