Food Bank's Lease Expires, Outreach Program In Jeopardy

PARKER, Colo. (CBS4) - A food bank in Parker says its meal program will be in jeopardy this holiday season if it can't find a new warehouse.

The nonprofit Southeast Community Outreach (SECOR) in Parker's lease has expired on the building it uses to house items it donates to families in need.

"I thought 'Oh my goodness, what are we going to do?' " said SECOR spokeswoman Brenda Prosise.

SECOR was renting the space for a discounted price of $3 per square foot and have been told they need to be out by Oct. 31.

Looking elsewhere, the lowest they could find was $8 per square foot -- almost three times more.

SECOR's Christmas outreach program, which provides gifts and food to about 3,500 children and their families a year is now in jeopardy.

Most of the gifts have already been donated this year, but food will not be in the budget.

"There are a lot of families that will be without Christmas dinner or food for the week," Prosise said. "It's going to be a devastation for a lot of people."

Prosise is still hopeful the organization will find a reasonable storage facility and will still continue to serve the community.

"We need to take things as it is and trust that we're going to be taken care of," she said.
