Fire Districts Becoming Proactive In Fighting Fires

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4)- Some fire districts in Colorado are becoming proactive in preventing future fires.

Firefighters in Boulder are trying to keep fires from igniting in current hot, dry conditions by watering dry areas including Chautauqua Park. They look for dangers that might spark a wildfire or grass fire.

"We're in very dry conditions. We want to have our crews out and about and ready to go," said Boulder Fire and Rescue spokesman Dave Zader. "We're keeping an eye on what's going on in the community. We're looking for any potential sources of ignition."

Fire crews have the equipment needed to patrol dry areas.

"This is a type six engine. We carry 320 gallons of water in here," said Zader.

The trucks also are equipped with hoses, rakes and axes to fight a wildfire. Firefighters urge homeowners to be proactive as well.

"Clear the brush, the leaf litter out of gutters. Make sure the flammable debris around the house is pulled away," said Zader.
