Dog Survives Getting Run Over On Sheridan
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) - A small, determined dog who was saved by Good Samaritans after she was run over is recovering from a broken back and shattered pelvis in Englewood.
The dog, a Maltese mix, needs time and tenderness to move past what she's been through.
Early on Jan. 14 a driver spotted the pup on Sheridan Boulevard near 5th and saw that a truck was heading right towards her.
"He actually positioned himself in front of her and stopped the truck," said Amy Hoffner, who is the driver's ex-wife.
It turned out the animal had already been hit by another car and badly hurt.
Hoffner's ex-husband brought the animal to her and she "Couldn't say no." Typically a dog with her extent of injuries and without owners would have been euthanized but Hoffner became her advocate. She's joining with her former partner to pay for the majority of the animal's vet bills and she is taking her home so dog can be her pet.
She also named the dog Emily.
Emily was taken to the Veterinary Referral Center of Colorado, where veterinarians had to use screws and cement in their operations on her.
"We knew she would survive if we could make her whole again by putting her back together," said Dr. Stephen Lane.
Emily went home with Hoffner on Monday after more than a week at the center and is expected to make a full recovery.
"Her life was worth every penny," Hoffner said.
