Cherry Hills Village Residents Warned About Mail Thefts
CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. (CBS4) - Cherry Hills Village Police are urging residents to use secure mailboxes for outgoing mail after a string of mail thefts.
A homeowner's security camera captured the thief taking mail the morning of Sept. 11 and then driving away in a silver-colored car. Police say multiple homeowners have had their mail stolen and that it's possible there is more than one thief.
"I did just put two checks in the mail yesterday," said Alex Corboy, a Cherry Hills resident. "I popped them in my mailbox, so I better check on those."
Authorities told CBS4 the suspect or possible suspects are taking both incoming and outgoing mail.
Malcolm Seawell had his outgoing mail stolen from his Cherry Hills mailbox a few years ago.
"Checks were taken and the police had actually called us later because somebody had found our mail dumped on the side of the road," Seawell said.
Seawell has since installed a mailbox that requires a lock and key in order to retrieve any items inside. He has also changed his mailing habits.
"We don't send any outgoing mail from the street," Seawell said. "It either comes with me to the office or I put it in a mailbox near the school."
Cherry Hills Village Police are asking for the public's help in identifying the suspect. Anyone with information regarding these crimes or recognizes the suspect in the sketch is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867).
David Rupert, a spokesman for the United States Postal Service in Denver, says mail theft is federal offense.
