CDOT Wants $20M Sprinkler System In Eisenhower Tunnel
DENVER (CBS4) - Colorado transportation officials want to install a sprinkler system in the Eisenhower Tunnel to mitigate the risk of fire there.
The Eisenhower-Johnson tunnels on Interstate 70 are among the busiest corridors across the Continental Divide.
The Colorado Department of Transportation wants to put in a $20 million system that would control heat from a fire so firefighters could get inside.
Although there have been fires inside the tunnel, there's never been a fatality inside.
The push for the sprinkler system is part of a move to make the tunnels safer.
