Teen suspect wanted in fatal shooting of Penn State student in Philadelphia arrested in Colorado, police say
One of the suspects wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a Penn State student in South Philadelphia was arrested in Colorado, police said Wednesday night.
Philadelphia Police Department Deputy Commissioner Investigations Frank Vanore said 16-year-old Azzubair Outen-Fleming was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Colorado. The teen will be charged with murder, criminal conspiracy, robbery, illegal possession of a firearm and other counts.
Kaiseem Smith, 16, is also being sought by police in connection with the fatal shooting of Billy Schmidt, who was fatally shot near his South Philadelphia home on June 6. U.S. Marshals are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to Smith's arrest.
Earlier Wednesday, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner announced that 35-year-old Donte Abdulmalik, Outen-Fleming's stepfather, was charged in connection with the fatal shooting. He was charged with hindering apprehension, obstruction of justice and tampering with evidence in connection with this case. He was also wanted for violating either parole or probation, Krasner added.
The U.S. Marshals said Outen-Fleming fled Pennsylvania around June 11. Investigators later determined the teen had distant family members in Colorado.
On July 1, U.S. Marshals said law enforcement established surveillance at a residence in the 4200 block of Loomis Avenue in Colorado Springs that had ties to Outen-Fleming's family in Philadelphia.
Outen-Fleming was taken into custody around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday inside the home in Colorado Springs, according to U.S. Marshals. He attempted to conceal his identify, but U.S. Marshals said he was identified through "investigative means."
Outen-Fleming is currently being detained at the Zebulon Pike Youth Services Center in Colorado Springs and awaiting extradition to Philadelphia, U.S. Marshals said.
"Crossing state lines did not prevent this arrest," Robert Clark, the supervisory deputy Marshal for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, said in a statement. "The U.S. Marshals Service quickly tracked and apprehended Azzubair Outen-Fleming to Colorado, and we will continue our pursuit of Kaiseem Smith until he is in custody."
