According to the sheriff's office, a deputy conducted a traffic stop in the area of Prospect Road and Riverside Avenue in Fort Collins about 2:45 a.m. After stopping and having a brief interaction with the deputy, the adult female driver got out of the vehicle as requested. The adult male passenger got into the driver's seat and left the scene.

Deputies followed with their lights and sirens activated, but the driver continued to elude authorities for several miles. The vehicle left the roadway in the 2600 block of Terry Lane Road/Highway 1 and crashed into a ditch.

That's when deputies said the suspect got out of the vehicle and approached deputies with a knife in hand. That's when the suspect got into an unoccupied patrol cruiser and began driving around deputies who were standing by.

One deputy fired his weapon, striking the suspect. Deputies began administering first aid and the suspect was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

According to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office, Highway 1 between Gregory Road and Country Club Road was closed after the shooting and remained closed for about 10 hours. The highway is east of Terry Lake in the Fort Collins area.

The Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting.
