Woman shot during overnight robbery in Lakeview, police say

Chicago police late Sunday were looking for the suspects behind an armed robbery in the East Lakeview neighborhood in which a woman was shot and wounded.

Police said the woman was shot after the suspects struggled to get away with her personal belongings.

Multiple neighbors said they made calls to 911 after hearing a gunshot and then the sound of screaming. They said they looked out their windows to see the victim lying in a driveway covered in blood.

The neighbors said they were glad and surprised to hear the woman was in good condition following the shooting.

"It looked really bad from what I could see," said Tyler Converso.

Converso said he was having people over at his apartment in the 400 block of West Wellington Avenue, near Pine Grove Avenue, around 12:30 a.m. Sunday when they heard the gunshot.

"We looked outside, and there were a ton of police — maybe like 20, 30 policemen, and ambulance, and the body was out there," said Converso, "and they pulled out the stretcher, and yeah, it was a tough scene."

Police said three unidentified men jumped out of a silver sport-utility vehicle, approached a 24-year-old woman who was walking down the street, and demanded her belongings at gunpoint.

There was a struggle before one of the robbers shot the young woman and got away in the silver SUV, police said.

Police said the woman was shot in the abdomen. She was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was last reported in good condition.

"I don't think I'm exempt from something that happens to a lot of people," said another witness, Christina.

Another witness, Christina, also heard the gunshot from her apartment nearby. She said she immediately called 911.

"I just heard one shot, and then I heard her screaming," said Christina.

Christina was seen asking police if they had any update on the victim's condition.

"It was terrible," said Christina. "I couldn't go help her, but I heard her for a little bit like just screaming — and that was awful."

Another neighbor, who did not want to be on camera, said he was walking home when he saw the victim on the ground surrounded by police.

"All of a sudden, I realize there was a person on the floor, and they were bleeding out," Daniel said.

Daniel said armed robbers tend to target the area more once the weather warms up.

"It tends to have a spike during the summer, and especially at night," he said, "so it just makes you think twice about walking in the middle of the night."

Converso also had some safety advice.

"Living in the city, you always kind of have to watch your back and be aware," he said. "If you're getting robbed, just give it up. You know, give up your stuff. It's tough, but you know, it's either that or your life."

Multiple Chicago police squads were seen in the area of the robbery Sunday. They said they plan on ramping up patrols in the area, at least for the next couple of days.

As of late Sunday, no one was in custody. Belmont Area detectives are investigating.
