Driver crashes into Detroit Metro Airport terminal looking to "meet Tom Cruise and save his dad"

A man who crashed an SUV into the Evans Terminal at Detroit Metro Airport Friday morning told police he was there to "meet Tom Cruise and save his dad."

The crash happened at around 9:30 a.m. at the airport in Romulus, Michigan, when police say the 67-year-old driver was traveling the wrong way down Rogell Drive in a Cadillac SUV when he drove between the barricades at a slow rate of speed outside the terminal and into its front door, stopping just before a security checkpoint. Officials say the man drove through gaps in the barricades, which are in place to comply with ADA requirements.

The driver, who has not been identified, was arrested around 9:40 a.m. Authorities say the man appeared "disoriented" after the crash.

Police did not find any firearms or weapons at the scene.

Law enforcement is currently interviewing the suspect, and a report will be filed with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for possible charges.

No serious injuries have been reported, according to the Wayne County Airport Authority. One traveler sustained a "possible" minor injury, officials said, but refused treatment and got onto her flight.

Normal operations resumed at the Evans Terminal by 11:30 a.m. No flights were impacted by the crash, and the terminal remained opened, according to airport officials.

Man drives car into McNamara Terminal in January

The car crash at the Evans Terminal on Friday follows a crash into the McNamara Terminal in late January.

On Jan. 23, a man crashed a Mercedes-Benz sedan into the McNamara Terminal near Delta Air Lines' check-in counters

The Wayne County Airport Authority said that the vehicle drove through an airport entrance and struck a ticket counter. The driver was taken into custody, and six people were treated at the scene by firefighters.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
