8 dead, 40 others wounded in Chicago weekend shootings

CHICAGO (CBS) -- At least 8 people were killed and 40 others were wounded in shootings over the weekend in Chicago, including a deadly mass shooting in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. 

The victims of this weekend's violence ranged in age from 8 to 59 years old. Ten of the victims were under age 18.

The first homicide of the weekend occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday in the 2600 block of North Sawyer. A 29-year-old man who was shot died at the scene. No one is in custody.

The second fatal shooting of the weekend happened around 5:15 p.m. Saturday in the 7700 block of South Carpenter Street, where police found a 22-year-old man lying on the street with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Less than five minutes later, about half a mile away, in the 7700 block of South Union Avenue, police said a 20-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk, when two men shot him from down the street. The victim was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Around 9:20 p.m. Saturday, one child was killed, and ten other people were injured in the city's Back of the Yards neighborhood. 

The victims were at a family gathering, and witnesses say two people came up on foot and opened fire. 

A 9-year-old girl was killed. A 1-year-old boy and an 8-year-old boy were left in critical condition. A 9-year-old boy was in good condition. Seven adults between the ages of 19 and 40 were also injured, police say. 

Police said the incident was not a random act of violence and was likely gang-related. 

On Saturday night just after 10 p.m., a 9-year-old boy was shot while playing on the sidewalk in the 1500 block of South Sawyer. The boy was struck in the right ankle and was transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition. 

In other shootings between 5 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday:

Friday

  • At 8:40 p.m., in the 4000 block of West Palmer Street, officers responded to a report of a person shot inside a home, and found a 44-year-old woman on the floor of a bedroom with gunshot wounds to the chest, back, and right wrist. She was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition.
  • At 9:41 p.m., in the 6100 block of North Mozart Street, a 16-year-old boy was walking on the sidewalk, when someone in a black sedan pulled up and shot him in the right leg. The boy was taken to Ascension Saint Francis Hospital in good condition.
  • At 10:57 p.m., in the 600 block of East 62nd Street, A woman in her late 20s was in her home when she got into an argument with a man who pulled out a gun and shot her several times. She was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.

Saturday

  • At 12:24 a.m., in the 3500 block of South Kedzie Avenue, a 20-year-old man was sitting in a car when someone in another vehicle shot him in the right shoulder. The victim took himself to St. Anthony Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.
  • At 12:30 a.m., a 17-year-old girl was dropped off at Thorek Memorial Hospital with two gunshot wounds to the upper right thigh. She was listed in good condition, but refused to answer any questions from police about the shooting.
  • At 10:32 a.m., in the 1400 block of North Orleans Street, a 35-year-old man was outside when someone in a passing vehicle shot him in the left leg. The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
  • At 2:45 p.m., in the 3000 block of South Pulaski Road, a 33-year-old man was driving when four people in a black sedan pulled up next to him, and someone shot him in the shoulder. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
  • At 3:30 p.m., in the 5700 block of South Loomis Boulevard, a 36-year-old man got into an argument with another person, who shot him in the back. The victim was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.
  • At 5:29 p.m., in the 3500 block of West Dickens Avenue, a 19-year-old man was in a car when a gray sedan pulled up next to him, and someone inside shot him in the right leg. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
  • At 7 p.m., in the 7200 block of South Sangamon Avenue, officers responding to a call of a person shot found an unidentified male in a parked vehicle, with a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.
  • At 7:54 p.m., a 23-year-old woman was leaving her home in the 5800 block of South Union Avenue, when she heard gunshots and felt pain. She took herself to St. Anthony Hospital with a gunshot wound to her finger, and was listed in good condition.
  • At 9:19 p.m., in the 9300 block of South Bishop Street, a female in a silver sedan with two other people got into an argument and sprayed pepper spray inside the vehicle. The driver fled the scene, and stopped a short distance away, where a silver sedan approached, and someone inside fired shots. A 21-year-old woman was shot in the head, and was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. A 15-year-old boy was shot in the chest, and was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in critical condition.
  • At 9:58 p.m., in the 10500 block of South Edbrooke Avenue, a witness heard gunfire, and found a 27-year-old man on the ground unresponsive. The witness took the victim to Roseland Community Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
  • At 11:26 p.m., in the 4800 block of West Arthington Street, a group of people was standing on the street when two men were shot. A 30-year-old man was taken to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the neck, and was pronounced dead. A 36-year-old man was shot in the left calf, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
  • At 11:29 p.m., in the 3300 block of West Beach Avenue, a 22-year-old woman was in the back seat of a car, when someone shot her in the right leg. She was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

Sunday

  • At 12 a.m., in the 3500 block of West Harrison Street, a 23-year-old man was on the sidewalk when someone shot him in the chest and face. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
  • At 1:07 a.m., in the 4700 block of South Loomis Boulevard, a 21-year-old man was standing in the alley, when someone started shooting. The victim took himself to Provident Hospital in good condition, with a graze wound to the lower left back.
  • At 1:23 a.m., in the 5600 block of South Wood Street, a group of people was sitting on the porch of a home when a vehicle pulled up and someone inside started shooting. A 31-year-old man was shot in the hand and buttocks, and was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. A 32-year-old man was shot four times in the buttocks, and was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition. A 59-year-old man was shot twice in the shoulder and twice in the buttocks, and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
  • At 1:26 a.m., in the 2700 block of South State Street, a 26-year-old woman was walking on the sidewalk, when someone shot her in the left leg. She was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.
  • At 1:37 a.m., in the 5500 block of West Congress Parkway, a 37-year-old man was at a gathering inside a home, when someone shot him in the left thigh. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
  • At 1:51 a.m., in the 7800 block of South Christiana Avenue, two boys were standing on the sidewalk, when someone in a truck started shooting at them. A 16-year-old boy was shot twice in the right thigh, and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition. A 15-year-old boy was shot twice in the right thigh, and was taken to Christ in good condition.
  • At 11:44 a.m., in the 9100 block of South Buffalo Avenue, a 19-year-old man was shot in his left hand and left foot. He was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital in good condition, but was not cooperating with responding officers.
  • At 7:16 p.m. in the 800 block of West 58th Street, two men, 22 and 28, were inside a vehicle when they were shot. The 22-year-old was struck in the wrist and the 28-year-old was struck in the chest. The victims self-transported to St. Bernard Hospital. The 22-year-old was in good condition and the 28-year-old was in critical condition. 
  • At 6:05 p.m. a 22-year-old man was dropped off at Holy Cross Hospital with a gunshot wound to the left hand. He was listed in good condition and told police he could not recall where the shooting happened. 
  • At 7:40 p.m., in the 2800 block of North Cannon Drive, a 49-year-old man was standing near a tree in Lincoln Park, when a gunman approached and announced a robbery. The victim grabbed the gun, and was shot in the torso. A friend took him to Ascension Saint Joseph Hospital, and he was transferred to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition.
  • At 10:17 p.m., a 41-year-old man was dropped off at Roseland Community Hospital with a gunshot wound to the back. He was listed in serious condition. Details on the shooting were not available.

Monday

  • At 1:19 a.m., in the 1600 block of West 82nd Street, a 21-year-old man was in the hallway of an apartment building, when a gunman shot him in the chest. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
