Sunny And Cool Again, But Look For Heat And Humidity Come The Weekend

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Temperatures will be sunny, but cool, for the rest of the day Tuesday – and once again, temperatures will not exceed the 60s along the lakefront.

But break out the Bermuda shorts for this weekend, because the entire Chicago area will be seeing temperatures approaching 90.

CBS 2 Meteorologist Mary Kay Kleist reports as of 11:20 a.m., the temperature was 67 degrees at O'Hare International Airport, 65 degrees at Midway, 64 at the lakefront in Chicago, and 62 in Waukegan. By comparison, it was a pleasant 72 in Kankakee.

In Lake Michigan, the water temperature is only 62 degrees, and a northwest wind picking up to 15 mph will keep lakeside temperatures cool through Tuesday, as well as Wednesday.

The high Tuesday for Waukegan is 65 and for Evanston 67. But well inland, the high for DeKalb is 72, and for Peru and Morris 76.

At 5:04 p.m., Chicagoans will be turning to the skies for the Transit of Venus, an exceedingly rare event that features the planet Venus passing in front of the sun. A tiny black dot will appear in front of the sun as Venus passes in front.

Experts emphasize that you mustn't look directly at the sun, but telescopes with proper filtering protection will be available free of charge for Illinois residents at the Adler Planetarium.

At U.S. Cellular Field, the White Sox' first pitch against the Toronto Blue Jays at 7:10 p.m. will be under clear skies and with northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph, with an air temperature of 63 degrees.

But no rain is in sight anytime soon. A 30 percent chance of rain is forecast for Friday night, but even then, not everyone will see a shower.

But the high begins to climb as the week goes on. The high for Wednesday is 74, Thursday 78, and Friday 84, as a high pressure system to the north moves away, and hot, humid air from the Deep South works its way north.

By the weekend, you'll need the air conditioner, or you'll be singing your own blues festival. The high for Saturday is 88, Sunday 89 and Monday 87.
