Robber Caught Trying To Use Red Line To Flee Heist

EVANSTON, Ill. (CBS) -- A man who robbed an Evanston cell phone store tried to make his getaway on the nearby CTA Red Line, but police caught up to him after just one stop on the "L" on Tuesday.

Evanston police said that officers responded to an armed robbery at Robby's Communications at 333 Howard St. at about 11:25 a.m. Tuesday.

Police broadcast a description of the offender, and officers canvassing the area learned the man may have boarded a southbound CTA train at the Howard Street station, according to a release from police.

Evanston police then contacted Chicago police and CTA officials to have the train detained at the Thorndale station on the Far North Side. Evanston and Chicago police got to the Red Line station and conducted a search of the train.

A man who matched the description of the offender was found and arrested, and a search found $410 in cash, which was reported stolen from the store.

Danny Wicker, 41, of 2054 E. 69th St., was taken back to the scene before being charged with one felony count of aggravated robbery, the release said.

Police said Wicker entered Robby's, asked the clerk some questions, and then left. A short time later he returned with his hand in his coat pocket and implied he had a gun. He ordered the clerk to open the cash register, then led her to the back of the store and told her to stay in the bathroom, the release said.

Wicker was scheduled for a bond hearing Wednesday at the Skokie courthouse.
